Two brothers, Proper and Manage Am, got a brand new car each, after graduating from school.
Their father was proud of their achievement, and he wanted them to enjoy the reward of their hard work.
The first brother was meticulous. He never missed the trip to the mechanic to get his car engine serviced, the oil changed and other parameters set. He always ensured that at any point in time, his fuel gauge was never below the half tank limit.
Mr Manage Am, on the other hand, only acted when the car’s warning signs started blinking. If you ran into him at the mechanic’s, you knew that the car must have broken down. He could often be seen trekking to the filling station with a 5-litre gallon in his hands, and a small hose around his neck. He drove until his fuel finished, then trekked to a filling station to buy fuel in a keg, and trekked back to where his car lay abandoned by the roadside to start siphoning the fuel into his car from the keg.
There are two kinds of people in the world.
Team Manage Am
“If it is not broken, don’t fix it” –
Team Proper
“Knowledge is power and it helps in making informed choices” –
Now, most of us belong to Team Manage Am, especially when it comes to our health. We wait until our bodies break down before we take action, and once it gets going again, we never bother with maintenance. Like Mr. Manage Am, we have adopted the maxim, “If it is not broken, don’t fix it”.
It may seem ridiculous, and I know think you are not one of them.
But be honest with yourself.
When was the last time you had a health check done?
Do you know the state of your body?
Our Reality
Every year, about 60 million people die globally.
Heart disease and stroke are two biggest causes of death globally. These diseases are commonly caused by the deadly twins – hypertension and diabetes. Unfortunately, this deadly duo is common in Nigeria.
Currently, 1 in 3 Nigerians has hypertension, and 1 in 33 is diabetic.
Hypertension and diabetes do not come out of nowhere. They often develop slowly, due to subtle changes happening in your body overtime. These changes can be tracked, and identified early through simple health checks.
The repercussions for having a Manage Am mindset when it comes to your health can be steep.
These consequences can range from hypertension, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and even the ultimate repercussion – death.
Why You Need To Change Your Team
Unlike other parts of living, healthcare has no visible meter.
When you are low on funds, your account balance clearly shows it.
When you are underperforming at work, your manager’s reviews, or your career path shows it.
But during the early days of the development of an illness, the disease may move silently around your body. As quiet as a mouse trying to steal food. You need a health check to helping you detect changes in your body that may predispose you to developing a disease.
Your body deserves more than a Manage Am mentality, and you deserve to live a healthy life, achieve your dreams and reap the fruits of your labour.
Life is a road, and your body is the vehicle, which brother are you?
