What is water?
It can be argued that water is the most essential nutrient to humans. It makes up two-thirds of our body mass. Water differs from the other nutrients in that it is an inorganic molecule, consisting of two atoms of hydrogen-bonded to one atom of oxygen.
How much do we need?
Firstly, adults need approximately 2 to 3 kilograms of water daily to balance losses. This is also equivalent to about 8 cups of fluid or 4-6 sachet water daily. This amount is substantially greater than the requirements for all other essential nutrients and can also increase or reduce based on clinical conditions e.g. sickle cell anemia, kidney failure etc
Secondly, signs and/or symptoms of dehydration are apparent within the first day, and a complete lack of water may result in death in as few as 3 to 4 days.
What are the Benefits of Drinking Water?
Constipation is defined as the infrequent passage of stools i.e. passage of stool less than three times a week, difficulty in passing stool, or incomplete defecation. When you are well hydrated, a certain quantity gets passed out in the digestive tract and this helps to soften the stool.
It is important to note that taking alcohol might lead to dehydration which can worsen constipation. It is also counterproductive to take tea and coffee while constipated because of their diuretic effects. So, reduce their intake as much as you can and make it a point to take an extra glass of water for every drink of coffee or tea
Kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs, located at the flank which helps to filter the blood and maintain fluid balance amongst other things
One of the most important causes of kidney stones is low fluid intake. Not drinking enough water can lead to the formation of a smaller volume of urine which is more concentrated and can lead to the formation of stones.
So stay hydrated especially when engaging in activities that cause you to sweat a lot. You can tell how diluted your urine is by looking at its color, the darker it is the more concentrated it is
3. Aids Weight Loss
Water increases satiety levels. This means that it creates a sense of fullness and boosts your metabolic rate which ultimately helps with weight loss.
4. Increase Energy Levels
Drinking water boosts your metabolism which has a positive Impact on energy levels.
5. Prevents headache
Dehydration can trigger headaches in some individuals. This is why it is important to drink adequate amounts.
6. Aids nutrient absorption
It helps with food breakdown. It also helps to dissolve vitamins and minerals. This ensures your body gets a balanced diet
7. Keeps your skin bright
Adequate water keeps your skin hydrated and promotes collagen formation. When dehydrated, the skin becomes more vulnerable to wrinkling
