Hello everyone. It’s me again and today we’ll be learning a very interesting and important topic on tips to try to stay safe and healthy at work
I know we just came back from a Long Easter holiday and we’d be transitioning to another holiday in a bit and I am sure we all can’t wait
But the news is (sad or good? you decide), holidays do come to an end. I am not trying to make you feel bad, but for those of us with regular working hours, we’ll have to go back to work and it is important to learn how to stay safe. (Did I see someone roll their eyes? lol)
A safe workplace is a happy workplace. While there are varying types of work which can range from construction, manufacturing, health work, office work, security agencies, etc and safety practices can differ based on this, do read along to learn general safety and health tips you can practice while at work
1. Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings
Be on the lookout for any recent safety changes, spills on the floor, wet floor signs etc. Get familiar with emergency exits, and fire alarms in your building.
Also, learn how to use fire extinguishers. Training can be provided by your workplace, also you can watch learning materials from YouTube, etc.
If you identify any safety hazards, inform your supervisor so a solution can be offered
2. Wear all necessary safety and workplace gear
If your type of work has safety gears in place be it fire-retardant clothing, foot gears, safety head covers, helmet, or if you’re a health worker, gloves or face mask, ensure you wear these safety materials when appropriate.
Also, only operate or use equipment you are familiar with and for their intended purpose to prevent workplace injuries.
Remember to follow your office covid 19 policies such as social distancing, use of face mask to stay safe
3. Good Posture and Clean Workplace
Poor posture can result in back pain, shoulder pain, and even “tech neck.” Use ergonomic chairs and desks at work.
Keep important and regularly used materials at arm’s length such as writing materials, staplers, etc, so you don’t have to stretch all the time.
Having a clean workplace ensures you are clutter-free and reduces the incidence of tripping over objects. If you work from home, this is a very important tip for you.
4. Take regular breaks
Digital breaks, sitting breaks, you name it. If you use digital screens a lot, ensure you practice the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away.
Sitting in a position for a long time can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and increase the risk of non-communicable diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure, stroke, etc
So simple tips you can try include; pacing, instead of communicating with a co-worker via calls, etc you can take a quick walk to meet the colleague. Use the stairs more instead of the elevator.
5. Eat healthy and stay hydrated
The hustle and bustle of life may make one forget to eat (Did I see breakfast raise their hand?)This can also affect entrepreneurs and individuals who own their businesses that they forget to eat and rest
Dehydration can lead to headaches and prevent you from functioning optimally while hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can make one irritated, dizzy, and even faint.
So ensure you eat a balanced meal. You can consider weekly meal prep or subscribe to healthy meal companies that deliver food to your workplace so you don’t have to skip any meal.
Get water bottles you take to work, those that have inscriptions that let you know how much you should drink marked against the time of the day can be very helpful
Bonus Tip
If you sustain any injury at work, always speak out and inform your supervisor.
If you feel sick, you can always speak to a doctor online and at your convenience. Follow and make use of the sick rule you have at work should you need to get some time off.
All these and more are simple tips you can practice. So stay healthy and safe at work
